Royal and M’Lisa are not your everyday typical business coaches. They have experienced ups and downs in the business and have pivoted their lives from surviving to thriving. The Ellis’ sat with LaPalme Magazine for an exclusive interview about their journey to the top. Catch it on the Q&A below:
LPM: What is RME Consulting Group? What is the main goal of the company?
RME: RME Consulting is a boutique consulting firm that helps business owners and service professionals double their revenue through our proven ACRE Method™️. Our philosophy is: In order to have a profitable, sustainable business, you need to “build it on an ACRE”. Not a literal acre-sized plot of land, but ACRE is an acronym that stands for Attraction (identify and attract your Ideal Client to you through effective branding, marketing, and visibility techniques, both online and in your community), Conversion (become confident in ethical sales practices to provide the right solutions for your clients’ needs and to increase revenue for your business), Retention (ensure clients have an incredible experience so they keep coming back to you again and again), and Expansion (scale your business according to your goals and vision of success).
LPM: What past experiences have led you to start RME?
RME: M’Lisa: I started my entrepreneurial journey as a makeup artist and licensed master esthetician. After opening a spa studio in 2014, I quickly realized that being good at the services I offered did not guarantee I would be successful in business! In fact, I had to move into my car just a few months after opening my doors because I wasn’t earning enough income to have both an apartment and a studio. This experience caused me to get scrappy and serious about building a real, profitable business! Within 2 years I was opening a second location and had created multiple streams of income. A car accident in 2017 led me to close my doors and pivot toward coaching full time with my husband and now business partner, Royal.
Royal: I was a police officer in Los Angeles for five years before I medically retired due to an on-duty injury. As a police officer, I gained so much experience in communication, working with the public, being the authority, and even sales techniques. After my injury in 2018, I partnered with M’Lisa to create Spa Strong®, where we coached spa owners and beauty professionals using The ACRE Method™️.
As we helped so many people grow their beauty businesses, it became clear that our methods are too effective to keep just in the beauty industry! Because of this, we pivoted into helping more business owners, including real estate agents, fitness trainers, and more. This is why we started RME Consulting Group! We want to help so many people find their purpose and thrive, just not survive. Some people are able to figure out that path on their own, but others need the guidance and accountability you get from consulting.
LPM: How important is accountability to be able to sustain a business?
RME: Accountability is everything! Taking ownership of your actions and results is what puts you in the driver’s seat and gives you control in your business and life. If you blame other people or circumstances for your lack of success, you don’t have the power to change it. But if you look inward and are open and willing to accept what you can do differently, now you are unstoppable.
Even though most of us know how important accountability is, it can be really hard to hold yourself accountable if you haven’t had to before! That’s why having a coach like us is essential in developing new, results-driven habits.
LPM: Being the game-changer in the business coaching industry, when is the right time to pivot/rebuild your business, especially through COVID?
RME: As in every breakthrough in life, there is no “perfect” time, so, do it now! If you are dissatisfied with where you are in your career or even in life, the only way to change it is to change it. Did COVID close a lot of doors for many businesses? Yes. But did it close EVERY door? Absolutely not! There are still opportunities to thrive as a business owner, it just may require you to be more innovative and think outside the box.
Of course, we recommend having a plan and finding the resources and support you need to help you be successful, but don’t get stuck in “analysis paralysis”. Take action even if you don’t have every next step figured out.
When COVID happened, we were offering smaller resources like online courses and a book. The beauty industry was hit really hard and so many people had to close their doors for months on end. It seemed like the worst possible time to start offering larger, customized, one-on-one consulting packages, but we went for it because we knew that level of help was absolutely necessary. And because we pivoted into that even though it seemed crazy, we were able to help so many spa owners save their businesses by teaching them how to pivot in their own way, too!
LPM: How do you think RME can help business owners thrive in such a harsh environment?
RME: Although most businesses have similar goals (increasing revenue, scaling, etc), every business has its own unique set of challenges. It can be hard to see the big picture of your business when you’re in the trenches of it every single day. As consultants, we know how to look at your business from a bird’s eye view and pinpoint inefficiencies and challenges that are keeping you from reaching your goals. We can help you see opportunities that aren’t being taken advantage of and come up with strategies to ensure optimal results. This isn’t a guessing game for us— This is why we’re known for doubling revenue!
LPM; What are your top tips for people who want to pivot/rebuild/start their business after COVID?
RME: Definitely think outside the box. Just because things have always been done a certain way doesn’t mean that’s the best or only way to do them! Also, make sure you understand your Ideal Client’s pain and pleasure points. If you don’t know the problem you’re solving and the transformation you’re providing, it will be hard to market your product or services! And finally, use your resources. Whether you use consultants like us, an online course, or information from podcasts and YouTube videos, commit yourself to implementing what you learn. Information alone won’t build your business! You need to take action, stay accountable, and be willing to get out of your comfort zone to achieve your goals.
LPM: As business coaching gurus, what advice can you give to our readers? How do you want to inspire them to start their own business journey?
RME: The advice we would give them is to start now! There is no better time than right now to follow your dreams and create the life you want. Yes, it can be scary, but that’s why we are here to guide you!
