ICELAND: A DIFFERENT PLANET

Welcome to Reykjavik !

Chances are that you’ve probably seen this church on a postcard or somewhere online but nothing beats seeing this monumental building in person!

Hallgrimskirkja (pronounced hatl-krims-kirkya) is the iconic Lutheran church that dominates the sky and towers over the city of Reykjavik and boasts some of the most beautiful architecture in the country. It’s actually the biggest church in Iceland and can be seen up to 13 miles away!

The architecture was inspired by Iceland’s landscape – the rugged mountains, glaciers, and volcanoes, and so tried to create an ‘Icelandic style of Architecture’ using these as design elements. It represents the many waterfalls in the country and has columns on either of the tower side that look very similar to the volcanic basalt you’ll find around the island.

In the front of the building is a beautiful statue of the Viking Leifur Eiríksson, the first European to discover North America welcoming all to visit. This was a gift by the United States in 1930 to Iceland for celebrating 1000 years of its Parliament.

The inside is relatively plain but the most eye-catching feature is the huge 5275-pipe organ installed in 1992! It’s truly beautiful!

There’s also an observation deck in the main tower to have views of the city which costs around $20 USD

Get there early if you want to avoid crowds because it’s typically busy after 10am!
