Dubbed as “game changers” in Hollywood, filmmakers Roderick McClure and Joshua Ferrell formed RodFather Productions as a way to bring dynamic and often overlooked stories to the screen. The father and son-in-law duo take pride in their ability to create unprecedented environments on set, allowing the brilliance of exceptionally talented individuals to truly shine. Apart from creating dynamic films, the family run production company strives to empower young creatives, and the future generations of those chasing a dream. In addition to their love of filmmaking, the RodFather family is also passionate about philanthropy and travel.
We jumped at the opportunity to speak with Roderick and Joshua as well as Morgan McClure Kokaram about their unique journey, their new film Both Eyes Open, and their incredible globetrotting adventures…
Your journey with RodFather Productions is certainly an incredible one… What would you say makes it so unique and sets it apart from other production companies?
RodFather Productions stands out due to our unwavering commitment to authentic storytelling and fostering an inclusive environment. We prioritize the voices and stories of diverse communities, ensuring that our narratives reflect real experiences and perspectives. Our production process is highly collaborative, emphasizing respect and support for every team member. This approach not only enhances the quality of our work but also creates a positive and empowering atmosphere on set, making our projects unique and impactful.
How would you describe the dynamic between the two of you? How do you complement each other both on and off set?
Our dynamic is built on mutual respect and complementary strengths. Roderick brings a wealth of experience and visionary thinking, while Joshua excels in people connection and strategic planning. On set, this balance allows us to tackle challenges from different angles, ensuring a holistic approach to filmmaking. Off set, our relationship is grounded in family values and open communication, which helps us maintain a strong personal and professional bond.
Your latest production Both Eyes Open is in post-production. What do you hope audiences take away from the film when it’s available?
We hope that audiences experience “Both Eyes Open” as a journey into the complexities of the human psyche. The film explores themes of honesty, paranoia, and trust, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own perceptions and relationships. We want the film to spark meaningful conversations and leave a lasting impression, inspiring viewers to consider the profound impact of truth and deception in their own lives.
Roderick, as a late bloomer in the filmmaking space, what impressions do you hope to leave on the world of entertainment?
I hope to leave a legacy of authentic storytelling that reflects diverse experiences and inspires others to pursue their dreams, regardless of their background or when they start. My journey demonstrates that it’s never too late to follow your passion and make a meaningful impact. I aim to create films that resonate deeply with audiences and contribute to a more inclusive and representative entertainment industry.
Joshua, you pride yourself in helping young creatives in the industry. What hopes do you have for the future generations of those in entertainment?
My hope for future generations is that they continue to push boundaries and bring fresh perspectives to the industry. I want young creatives to feel empowered and supported in their endeavors. By fostering a culture of mentorship and collaboration, I hope to see a more innovative entertainment landscape where new voices and talents can thrive.
When not on a film set what is your favorite thing to do with your free time?
[Rod] When not on set, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and cycling on my bike. Putting in over 100 miles per week is a therapeutic and exhilarating experience for me. Traveling is also a passion of ours, as it provides new experiences and inspiration for our work. Whether it’s exploring new cultures or simply relaxing with loved ones, these moments recharge us and fuel our creativity. You both have a love for travel. What are some of your favorite destinations you’ve visited? Where would be your dream location for a film?
Some of our favorite destinations include France, particularly Cannes, where we had an amazing experience of attending the film festival. We also love exploring various parts of Africa due to our involvement in mission efforts there. Our dream location for a film would be a place rich in cultural history and natural beauty, such as Ghana or the diverse landscapes of Africa, which would provide a stunning backdrop and feel for any story.
Morgan, you also produce alongside your father. What are some upcoming projects that you’re working on that you can share with us?
We are currently working on several exciting projects, including a feature film about a young African American entrepreneur who founded an airline by the age of 27. Additionally, we have an exciting animation series in the works, which opens up new creative possibilities for us. These projects reflect our commitment to telling impactful and diverse stories.
Morgan, tell us more about the nonprofit you created called The She League. What are your goals for this organization?
The She League is an organization I founded to empower women professionally by providing them with the resources, access, exposure and opportunities needed to succeed in their careers and personal lives. Our goal is to create a supportive community where women can connect, share experiences, and collaborate with one another. As an org, we value leadership, community and service. We focus on initiatives that promote leadership development, professional development and entrepreneurial skills, helping women to achieve their full potential and make a positive impact in their communities.
