Get Your Dream Lashes This Season with Pro-Tips from Sugarlash’s Courtney Buhler

Long voluminous lashes have long been the desire of every woman with lash extension dating
back to the 1800s where the press reported that residents of Paris had started sewing hair into
their eyelids to create fake eyelashes in 1882. Thankfully we have made leaps and bound in the
evolution beauty, but how do we really know we are going to the right person and getting the
right service that suit us? Luckily for you, we chatted with award winning lash-artist, CEO and Founder of Sugarlash PRO, Courtney Buhler. Getting down to the nitty-gritty of all the lash services offered and what lash treatment is right for you!

Lash Lift:
● What is it? /How is it done?
○ Lash lift is a next generation lash perm that is done with creams and beautifully
shaped silicone shields. Results have lashes perfectly curled for 8+ weeks!
● Why it’s great?
○ It’s a total breakthrough for the lash perming service. The traditional service
involved a cotton rod, and liquid solutions so it was somewhat dangerous if the
technician wasn’t very skilled.
○ With Lash Lifting, we have beautifully shaped silicone shields that give very much
a “I just used the best curler ever” look – while keeping the shape natural. In the
lash lift service we only process the base of the lashes (similar to where you clamp
them to curl them with a mechanical curler) to give them lift. This also keeps the
tips of the lashes healthy.
● Who is the perfect client?
○ Long natural lashes. If someone’s lashes are too short, it’s hard to keep the
solution creams isolated only to the base of their natural lashes. We recommend
getting onto a growth serum to grow them longer for optimal results!
○ Great alternative for lash extensions, especially if you get antsy during lash
extension application and prefer a quicker service.
● What to look for?/ What to be wary of?
○ Ask what product the salon is using and whether their lash lifts are done with
silicone shields or not. If they use cotton rods they will also likely be using liquids
which aren’t as easy to control.

Lash Growth Serums:
● What is it? /How is it done?
○ Growth Serums help to nourish and condition your eyelashes into growing
longer, stronger, and fuller. This is done at home.
● Why it’s great?
○ Any woman should make a growth serum part of their daily routine. Whether
they wear false lashes, lash extensions, get their lashes lifted, or go au natural –
long, strong lashes are always in style!
● Who is the perfect client?
○ This is an at-home product used daily by women as part of their skincare/beauty
regimen.
○ For full effects, you need to apply daily (or as instructed) so the client should be
diligent.
● What to be wary of?
○ The only thing to be weary of is irritation. Our bodies are unique and can react
differently to herbs and ingredients. If you’re ever experiencing redness, or
irritation – make sure it’s being applied properly!

Lash Extensions:
● What is it? / How is it done?
○ The idea of lengthening one’s eyelashes as a way of enhancing looks is not a new
one. Modern eyelash extensions are composed of single hairs attached to your
existing eyelashes with a medical grade adhesive. These eyelash extensions come
in a wide variety of styles, colors, and materials. Modern lashes are lightweight,
comfortable, and far superior to the older methods you’ve seen in the past.
● Why it’s great?
○ When done correctly, eyelash extensions are safe, comfortable and completely
customized to give the client their ideal lash look and to flatter/ enhance the
client’s unique bone structure. Eyelash extensions are water and sweat proof,
allowing you to wake up with perfect lashes for 4-6 weeks!
●What to look for?
○ It’s essential to look for a great lash artist! There are many myths out there about
lash extensions causing damage or feeling uncomfortable. These are totally false
and stem from poor application by an inexperienced provider. Lash extension
providers are required to have a cosmetologist or esthetician license in most
states, but individual lashes aren’t usually covered in cosmo/ esthetic school.
Your lash artist needs to take an in-depth lash course and apply themselves to
practicing the precise art for optimal results and safety. It’s great if your eyelash
extension artist is licensed and has a certificate (or 5!), but the absolute best thing
to do is to research.
●What to be wary of:

○ In an artist:
■ Improper Isolation. Your lash artist needs to be knowledgeable about
proper isolation. Each extension is bonded to ONE natural lash–no
exceptions!
■ Adhesive overload. When applied to the natural lash, the base tip of
the extension is dipped into adhesive and then adhered to the natural
lash. Too much adhesive adds additional weight to the natural lash and
cause stress on the natural lash.
■ Using too long or too thick of extensions for the client.
■ Each client has a unique set of natural lashes, their set of eyelash
extensions should also be customized to them. Your lash artist should
have a variety of extensions with many different thicknesses, curls, and
lengths to suit you.
■ Lash Cutting
■ We never condone the cutting of natural eyelashes. With the amount of
lengths, curls, and diameters eyelash extensions come in – there is no
reason that a lash technician cannot find something that blends and
compliments their existing natural lashes.
