100 Years of Men’s Hair and How Alexander the Great is the Reason You Shave

Men’s interest and dedication to grooming is no millennial trend. Some of our most common traditions coming from B.C.E. time, with really interesting meaning behind it. It’s no surprise that the Greeks made the use of wigs and make-up popular. But it was Alexander the Great’s rise to power (and his rise in vanity) that gave birth to what we would identify with today as the hair salon. Alex also insisted on clean shaven faces for battle so the opponent couldn’t pull on their beards, giving birth to the modern day barber shop. Of course the Romans has to get in on the fun. They made men’s grooming ritual last hours, going beyond the shave and trim into mani-pedis, massages etc..

The past 100 years have left us with no shortage of historically significant trends in mens grooming as well. From Beetles inspired bobs, to wartime trimming and you can catch them all on this under 2 minute video.
